Green Roof Types Explained
Extensive / Sedum Roof (£75-120/m²)
Pre-grown sedum mats installed on a thin substrate (50-100mm). Very low maintenance - needs almost no watering once established. Ideal for garages, extensions, and most flat roofs. Weight: 80-150kg/m².
Biodiverse / Wildflower (£100-150/m²)
Mixed planting with native wildflowers and grasses. Excellent for pollinators and biodiversity. Needs slightly more maintenance (1-2 cuts per year). Substrate 100-150mm. Weight: 120-200kg/m².
Intensive / Garden Roof (£150-300/m²)
Full garden with shrubs, trees, and walkways. Requires irrigation, deeper substrate (200mm+), and regular maintenance. Needs structural assessment. Weight: 250-500kg/m²+.

Green Roof FAQs
Can any roof support a green roof?
Most flat roofs can support extensive (sedum) green roofs. Intensive roofs need structural assessment. We'll check during our survey.
How long do green roofs last?
40-50+ years when properly installed. Green roofs actually protect the waterproof membrane from UV and temperature extremes, extending its life.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not for replacing an existing roof with a green roof. New structures or significant alterations may need permission.
What maintenance is needed?
Sedum roofs: 1-2 inspections per year, minimal weeding. Wildflower: 1-2 cuts per year. Intensive: regular garden maintenance.
Will it leak?
Properly installed green roofs include root barriers and are less likely to leak than traditional roofs. The vegetation protects the membrane.
